Genuine Milan (pronounced Mylan) straw hats were made from hand-braided 
wheat straw, that had been woven for over a century. The high cost of producing 
the Milan braid eventually led to its gradual replacement by synthetic braid. 
These synthetics allow for a more uniform texture and more vivid colors.
